I am Joe Marshall. Printmaker, Pyrographer, Comic artist and Illustrator.
I live in Tucson, AZ with my wife, two children, two dogs, and two cats.

                                Woodblock Printing
I use wood, metal tools, paper and ink.
These elements are the foundation of woodblock printing. This oldest process of printing, is both elegant and bad-ass. I create strong graphic images that embed a narrative thread. I love the way wood feels when cutting, the way paper and ink react. Each carve, each print is it's own moment. The work is based on natural observation, and using shapes causes the ground/figure often to switch and flip back and forth.
I have also begun a long series or portraits of people, places and things that are important to me. I am dedicated to the power of printmaking, and in the power of multiples in spreading that message.

                                       Pyrography
Pyrography is the process I use to decorate wood with fire. The term's meaning is "fire-writing",also known commonly as wood burning. From the controlled application of heat by a metal wire, the process mimics a pen & ink drawing, I also carve into the wood for texture and depth. These combine my love of wood and drawing to create unique pieces using the grain, cracks, and holes that occur in the wood naturally. This allows me to exploit "defects" in the wood. Done on mesquite, pine, and oak, featuring images of the Grand Canyon and portraits of my more notable saguaro neighbors.
